DHS
SCENE POLL!
Results considered..
by MORI(bund) statistical analysis
It's quick, it's hot, and it is an instant gauge to the mood of the Atari
demo scene! The DHS BBS Scene polls came to us in the Autumn, with a series
of carefully posed questions demanding answers! The polls got a good and
enthusiastic response in general, certain topics particularly so. We of
Alive mag feel we might perform a service to the wider scene by analysing
this first batch of topics, and what people thought.
What do you think of the Paracon 5 Invite?
############ - It was acceptable. (12)
#################### - It was good. (20)
#### - It was Senior Dads. (3)
############ - It was very good (12)
The first topic off the blocks acted as an instant reviewing panel of the
then just released Paracon invite intro. Out of 48 votes, the majority
opinion swung in favour behind it. In fact, I'm not sure the 'Senior Dads'
comparison was so damning either, as their work is considered to be 'genius'
by some disturbed people!
What is your opinion of Zombie Apocalypse?
######## - The best game since Superfly (8)
############ - It has great music! (12)
###### - It is hard to play. (6)
############### - I don't like it, I'm a zombie! (15)
### - It is too bloody (3) (Huh?! - Ed comment)
Another release, another chance for the Atari scene public to show their
approval. Forty-four votes were split fairly evenly over the worth of this
game. The 'I don't like it, I'm a Zombie' option gathered most votes, which
confirms something I've long suspected about certain members of the scene!
As for the three people who decided that it was too 'bloody', I think the
shock of getting out of bed might well kill you. Be careful out there!
What do you think of Fake demos?
############################### - They are funny sometimes. (31)
######## - They are better than TCB! (8)
################## - They suck! (18)
####### - WHo cares? (7)
The often vexed question of fake demos attracted a high response of 64
votes. It also showed a pragmatic and easygoing side to the Atari scene
public, as the majority opinion came out broadly in favour, albeit with a
substantial minority of 18 people against. I guess these are the people who
write the articles slagging fake demos?
Should we run online compo's for Xmas this year?
### - No, too close to Xmas. (3)
### - No, online compo's just suck! (3)
###################################### - Yes, Xmas themed. (38)
########################################## - Yes, any theme. (42)
This is the most influential poll conducted thus far. It actually led to a
course of action being taken. With 86 votes, all but six naysayers agreed
that a Xmas online competition should take place. The vote was 42 to 38 in
favour of a Xmas theme, set against any theme. The resulting of online compo
took in both elements of the nearly evenly divided vote. We then have to ask
if anyone who complained about the too short deadline, voted 'yes' earlier?
Who is the worst beer drinker in the Atari Scene?
######## - Baggio.(8)
################## - Crem/MJJ. (18)
####### - MSG. (7) (Heeey!)
########### - ST Survivor. (11)
################ - Some other person. (16)
### - Zerkman. (3)
I'm not sure how 'worst' was defined on this poll. Was it 'worst' as in
"drinking the most"? Or perhaps 'worst' at not drinking so much, but acting
as if you had?! (Including the puking part!) I voted as if it were the
latter, I'm sure most other people did too! this was the most heavily split
poll, with 63 votes spread around in scattergun fashion. I'm guessing that
the voting, to some extent, split up into local worst drinking champions,
and their local Atari scene supporters crowding around them? It is also
interesting that Evil managed to field *three* candidates from the French
scene for this dubious honour?!
Finally, I'd like to learn the names of those nominated under "some other
person". I think there are some interesting stories waiting to be told!
What sucks the most?
### - Change tyres in a snowstorm. (3)
################# - Crash of 40GB Atari hard drive. (17)
#### - Mushrooms on Pizza. (4)
###################### - USA. (22)
#### - Warm coke. (4)
####### - Windows. (7)
A free vote on the topic that exercises your rage the most. At least
according to Evil's priorities. Changing car tyres in a snowstorm most
probably collected a small number of local votes. For those of us living
south of Copenhagen, change 'snow' to 'rain'! This was the most politically
inclined poll so for, as the USA took the cup, even ahead of the ultimately
dispiriting 40GB hard drive crash. If the USA entry had been changed to
'George Bush', would any of the other categories have even got a vote?!
As for mushrooms on pizza, what was that all about? I feel sorry for
mushrooms. You wouldn't be at your best if you were sliced up thinly, and
baked to death yourself!
Name that game off the tune!
#### - Enchanted Land (4)
## - Giana Sisters (2)
#### - Stormlord (4)
############################## - Turrican (30)
######## - Wings of Death (8)
######## - X-Out (8)
This turns a poll into a 'scene quiz'! It was also one of the easiest
questions to misunderstand. Enter casual reader in a hurry, who spots a new
poll. doesn't bother to look closely at the 'download this mp3' bit, and
votes on what he thinks is the best ST game, rather than listening to the
music, and then matching the tune to the correct game. Havoc owned up to
doing this, I'm sure others did it in the early stages as well!
Based on this mishap, I'm not sure if the overwhelming vote for Turrican
reflects knowledge of the correct answer or not?
What music do you prefer?
## - Hip Hop. (2)
########## - Metal! (10)
# - Opera(?) (1)
################ - Something else. (16)
# - What the radio plays. (1)
########################## - YM Chipsounds! (26)
This was an odd one. Evil acting as an undercover spy for the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) sets this question, presumably to
catch out those people helping themselves to waRez copies of the kewl sounds
that they own. Only two people were motivated enough to fall for the
pisstaking categories of Opera and 'what the radio plays'. Atarian loyalties
fell firmly behind the YM-chipsound choice! The rumour that 'Metal' was
voted for by Richard Karsmakers, ten times over, hasn't quite been
suppressed yet!
Which STe demo was this? (Listen to the 30 second music clip)
############ - Bad Taste (12)
##### - Brain Damage (5)
########### - Delerious Demo III (11)
# - Grotesque (1)
######## - Lethal Trash (8)
### - Mental Hangover (3)
### - X-Plotion (3)
And we're back to the scene quiz idea. This time, people are wise to the
format, and actually manage to download the piece of music, before voting
this time. The relatively obscure subject matter manages to produce one of
the most uncertain and split votes yet. A lot of people stayed away
altogether, making this one of the smaller scene polls. (Evil did helpfully
supply the correct answer in the end, which was 'Bad Taste'.)
Which ST demo is this? (From the screengrab picture)
####### - Anomoly (7)
#### - Blood (4)
### - Cuddly demo (3)
##### - Decade Demo (5)
####################################### - Flight over Sirius (39)
### - Nostalgic-o (3)
##### - Skidrow (5)
The scene quiz rumbles on, and this time, we are treated to a screen grab of
a lovely voxel-style coloured dot landscape. A choice of better-remembered
demos usefully points people to the right answer, by a very decisive margin!
What is your New Years Promise?
############## - Be lazy! (14)
###### - Compose more Ace Tracker tunes (6)
############## - Finally skip SSD and use Triplex instead (14)
########## - Give neochrome a try (10)
#################### - Learn assembly (20)
########################## - Start Newschool vs Oldschool fights! (26)
##################################################################### - Code
more (69)
####### - Finish that EIL demo (7)
This is the current poll at time of writing, when I had to finally draw a
line under this article, in order to meet the deadline for this issue. This
very well attended poll has had an unusually long time to gather as many
votes as possible, 166 votes at the time of writing! Overall, the response
is positive, and we are starting to see the fruits of some of those
promises. But at the same time, I've got a different way of interpreting the
results of this poll, just see below!
######################################## - People who make the most noise
and complaints, generate heat without necessarily adding any light, and
provide the main visible life-signs of the Atari scene to outsiders who
don't know any better! (40)
##############################################################################
################################################# - People who are actually
doing stuff, but are keeping a very low profile, not saying much about it,
and hardly ever put their point of view on the BBS to counteract what the
complainers are claiming! (126)
Okay, time to get out of here!
CiH, for Alive Mag,various in 2003/04.
