CRYPTIC CLUES!
So who are these people?
CiH here, in yet another offer that you *can* resist. I just around to
thinking of another lighthearted concept in scene-related articles. This
time, I took my inspiration from the cryptic clue makers, so I'm asking a
series of weird questions, each one of which conceals a nick of an Atari
scene person or group within it.
I'll give the answers later on in this text, so the terminally frustrated,
and those cheating bastards among you, who cannot wait, can find out which
weird remark relates to which personality. But try to give it an honest go
eh? Most of the clues aren't that hard, and one or two are crying out "It's
bleedin' blatant wot I am, innit!?"
Mind you, one or two are real bastards as well, and really soak up all your
lateral thinking ability to suss out!
Off you go now..
1. The cat got this...
2. He dreamt of tunnels, but has latterly slid into darkness!
3. This theory is best avoided in Kansas!
4. He's howling at a large astral body!
5. A vowel imperfect demo.
6. This sea-skimming fish terrorised the Falkland Islands..
7. They're out to get me!
8. Haunting your 16-bit Atari.
9. He can be found chipping 10,000 leagues under the sea!
10. 101 up from a webpage not found?
11. Surely he's missing his cartoon buddy Ren?
12. Found clinging to the 16-bit wreckage!
13. These Swedish brothers had a mother.
14. These guys were a cold-war bunch of Charlies!
15. A Swedish gremlin?
16. This family man is neither black or white, but somewhere inbetween!
17. Diamond is a form of this geezer, so is charcoal!
18. The first people to be put up against the galactic wall and shot!
19. "R" is the fifth member of the squad.
20. Malcolm has an abbreviated message!

Cheating bastards and genuine seekers of the truth follow me!
1. Cream - The cat got it all!
2. Evil - I think that was one of the easier ones!
3. Evolution - They teach creationism in Kansas. Crazy Yanks!
4. Moondog - Fairly easy to piece together?
5. Damo - 'Vowel imperfect' as in 'a' in place of 'e'!
6. Exocet - As in the missile, easier to guess if you are a Frenchie.
7. Paranoid - Of course they are!
8. ST Ghost - His eerie wailings helped him win the Whip Pong compo!
9. Nemo - Slightly more literary reference than usual, think Jules Verne!
10. 505 - Some simple maths puts this answer in the bag.
11. Stimpy - An easy one to spot for fans of the cult cartoon series.
12. ST Survivor - And he just won't let go of it!
13. Nature - The trick is to fill the gap at the end of that sentence! So
you get 'Mother Nature'.
14. Checkpoint - As in 'Checkpoint Charlie' in Berlin! (I could have added
"relocated from Berlin to Dresden" to the question, but that would have made
it far too easy then!)
15. Gizmo - That one was gettable even if you were clinically braindead!
16. Grey - I probably made that too easy with the 'family man' reference!
17. Carbon - I also could have added graphite to this science-based
question.
18. tSCc - Or the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. Douglas Adams fans will
need no further explanation!
19. Squard - Ooh, that was a nasty one, wasn't it. You either got it
straight off, or you're still wondering what I was on about with that
question!
20. MSG - "You hv a msg, plse rd urgntly!"
Okay, that's your lot for this issue, I'm off until I can think up some
decent cryptic questions for the likes of Zerkman, Earx, and Deez, which
might be never!
CiH - For Alive! Mag,May 2003.
