Review :
--------
I think that everyone who's reading this have already played, at least one time,
one of the Turrican episodes. These games were wonderful because it features
great graphics, great gameplay, great weapons, great visual effects and ...
MARVELOUS musics.
These soundtracks are certainly the most well known works from Factor 5's
musician, Chris Huelsbeck. His style is mainly keyboard-based with very melodic
and groovy tunes. His melodies are great and it always fits perfectly to the
atmosphere of the game. He used a special 4 digital voices routine on Amiga
called TFMX, probably using less CPU time than classic MOD routines and also
including a 7 digital voices routine from Jochen Hippel (used for Turrican 2 & 3
title, hiscores and ending tunes). On ST, the musics have been converted to 3
voices YM with digidrums FX, by Jochen Hippel (that's why the conversions always
sounds great and are so accurates ... contrary to most of Amiga to ST games
conversion, you know that ! :).
Chris Huelsbeck
There are lots differents themes in each Turrican episode and i remember myself
playing only for listening to the music of a specific level (erm ... no, in fact
i didn't needed to play the game as there was a sound-test ;). By the way, I
didn't remember of any other computer game with a sound-test, contrary to
console games where there was one almost each time.
The versions of the musics in this album are very similar to the original ones
with better quality instruments and a better orchestration. Some tracks have
been put to create a kind of story for the CD (simulating battles and so on),
two of these are only vocal and sfx (tracks 2 & 13) and the two others are
vocals and sfx with excerpts of themes in the background (tracks 12 & 14).
Personnaly, i would have preferred normal tracks instead of those (but it's only
11:19 over the 68:49 of the CD :).
Expecting this, all the rest of the album is really great and i can't choose any
favorite track. "The Great Bath" (track 6) is the only track wich differs in
style from the game version as it's sounding very classical and medieval here.
The meldey consists of 8 differents themes nicely mixed in one track for half an
hour of Turrican madness. Note that Turrican 1 & 2 got quite the same beginning
in the title theme.
If you never played Turrican 3, as this one has only been released on Amiga, i
can tell you that the tunes from that episode are as great as those coming from
the 1st & 2nd ones. Note that Turrican 3 got the same musics than Mega Turrican
on Genesis and Super Turrican 1 on Super Nintendo. In fact only the Super
Turrican 2 musics (on Super Nintendo) aren't really great as those aren't very
melodic. You can download the original soundtracks of Mega Turrican and Super
Turrican 1 & 2 on Zophar Domain (http://www.zophar.net) in GYM and SPC files
sections (you will need specific PC players or WinAmp plugins for listening to
those).
If you like the music in any of the Turrican games, you can't miss that album !
It's one of the best "covers" album released so far and simply one of the best
game music albums ever composed.
