Zik a la Marcer Disk
"What? Another of those?"
"It isn't even a proper demo!"
"Do I have to boot my ST again? I'm bored! I'll have a listen on STEEM!"
...and all these quotes come from people who people who just want to collect all
things Atari. They just download it because it's a new production and never even
have a listen because these kind of demos focus on the music.
A load of bollocks, I say! It's always nice to have such small demos from people
you don't expect, like Marcer. Former (or still) member of Eliteand Atari
Legend, crews that "just" supply Atari software to the public. And look! He got
hold of 2 new chip trackers, Music Mon 2.1 and Maximyzer, took the time to
fiddle around with them (something that the majority of people don't do), and
managed to produce some more-than-decent sounds!
Now, as you expect with these demos, there isn't a lot of coding involved. The
musicis the prime force. So let me list the tunes here and write some quick
comments for them (please bear with me, I'm not a musician, I'm just a silly
coder, I don't know how much simple or complex the tunes are, I'm just using my
ears and write my feelings, and I think that it's what matters in the end):
"At house"by Marcer: The kick-off tune of this music demo (if we exclude the
small jingle for the starting logos). A small cheery tune that serves as an
intro for the rest of the tunes. Very well done!
"Comic Bakery Mix"by Martin Galway: here we have the first of the tribute
tunes, which has become somewhat a tradition for composers that introduce
themselves via demos like these. We all know the tune of the Galway meister (the
Mad Max conversion has been included in so many demo screens that one loses
count!), and here Marcer gives it his own SID twist. So a tune that was
originally on SID converted to SID. Not my favourite Galway tune, but not bad in
any sense (all versions I've heard).
"Disk0"by Marcer: Another original tune, seems like it's based on the first
tune, but has a very different progression. I like the chords in both tunes
"Hybris remix"by P. Van Der Valk: One of my personal favourite tunes enters
the scary remix zone! Result? Well, I'm too in love with the original (by
"original" of course I mean the first version I've heard, which was on the ST by
Chrispy Noodle on Edsynth) to appreciate the conversion. Sorry!
"Impossamole mix"by Barry Leitch: What more can I say that I haven't said in
the previous conversions I wrote about earlier? Only that I like this one :)
"La Isla Bonita"by Madonna(really? I mean did ever Madonna write a song for
herself?): The only tunes that Madonna performed I ever went into public saying
that I actually liked were those contained in her (or maybe William Orbit's?)
album "Ray of light". The tune Marcer chose here were one of the many that
haunted me in my youth as I kept hearing it anywhere and I never grew fond of!
Of course Marcer does his best to make it not suck so much, but, ARGH!, the
memories...
"Lotus 1 Title Remix"by Ben Daglish: A game I played till destruction whose
title tune gets a cool remix! Great! Who's for a quick 2-player game on the
first 7 levels? :)
"New Time"by Marcer: The intro reminds "Push it" by Salt'n'Pepa (IIRC!) and
then goes on to become something like a hardcore remix? Sorry, I'm not really in
this kind of music...
"Noisy Remix"by Jeroen Tel: Another mega tune from one of the early masters.
This one's nicely done! (in my humble opinion, as always!)
"Out Run 2005 Remix" by David Whittaker: Let's face it, Outrun was a crap
conversion because of the really low frame rate. This is what an ST was not
supposed to do in the first place! Nevertheless, the 2 awesome Whittaker tunes
(which are conversions of the original arcade tunes, I'm pretty sure) are here
to stay with us in all eternity. Nice conversion btw!
""by : Ermmmmm, what? I just pushed the right arrow key a couple of times and
got to this one! It doesn't state anything on the status line, and the small
bullet that shows which tune is being played is nowhere to be found! It just
plays a random tune from one of the previous! Pushing the up/down arrows kind of
restores the pointer! Oooops!
The Verdict
I'll be short and sweet here (especially since I ran out of smart-arse things to
say :). Generally the selection of the tunes is nice, although I'd like to see
more original tunes. The tunes are on the short side, but that doesn't matter
much (it also helps for a quick review!). It's a nice little intro showing the
capabilities of a potentially good musician.
More please, Marcer!
