D-BUG #188 - Review

They only had to get the ball rolling, as it seems. With the release of ULS D-
BUG are back on the house and start cracking out menus again. This one has 2
quite rare gameson it and a mini Megademo(what?) from the past.

The first game is "Viaje al Centro de La Tierra"by Toppo Soft(well, I told you
that it is rare!), translated to english by the crew as well! Unfortunately I
can't comment on the game too much, because I only tried it on emulators and
there seems to be a problem on both Steem and SainT. Namely after I get past the
first game screen (which is a sliding puzzle), the game asks for the 2nd disk,
and no matter what I press, the game seems stuck there. More debugging in order
mr. Waddy? The graphics seem very nice, the title music was so-so, and I can't
comment on the coding, because I haven't gotten too far (because of that bug).
It seems a nice game though.

*UPDATE*After a couple of irc sessions with Showaddywaddy (hi there!) we
managed to get a working version of the game!!! He actually haven't received a
bug report for this game. So we assume nobody played it. Just seeing the sliding
puzzle turned everyone away in disgust ;) No matter though. So, after that
sliding puzzle we get an arcade section in which 3 characters (an old guy, a
younger and a female) try to (I guess) get to the centre of the earth. Now, as
we are a bit pressed for time I didn't progress in the game that far (and
perhaps there are some in-game keys that make the gameplay easier).

The second entry is "Life's a bitch" by the Lost Boys. We all know that old
classic demo (and if you don't you'd better stop reading now and go and watch
some demos. Seriously) with the ever funny "Bittner mix", the two screens by
TLB, two by ULM(one in collaboration with the Replicants), and one by Gigabyte
crew & TEX. Now, with the magic of ULS (or maybe not!), it can be run from hard
disk, provided you have enough memory.

The last one is the epically titled "The Adventures of Alice who went though the
looking-glass and came back though not much changed". Well, it's a text
adventure, and a rare one too. Unfortunately, ever since I played Loom I gave up
on text adventures and haven't looked back since. Furthermore, I have to rush
this article a bit because I am on a deadline here. From what I saw though, the
parser doesn't look too powerful(like the Magnetic Fields' one, or Level 9's)

*UPDATE 2*Due to the first game's fix this game is actually out of this disk!!!

What else to say here? Please, fix Journey to the centre of the Earth as it
looks promising! But just the inclusion of such a nice demo (with much faster
loading times!), it makes the whole disk worthwhile.
GGN for Alive Magazine, 21/12/2005 (deadline!!!!)
                                                               (update 23/12/2005)
