Alive 11
Alive a rough Guide
Considered in detail, issue by issue.

I'm attempting to do an issue by issue summary here of the last five years
of Alive, in a realtime sense of things, I'm at the Medway Jagfest, it is
Sunday morning, and no-one is in a mood to do any sort of work. So here
goes....

This was originally going to be something added on to my main article
commemorating the 5th birthday. A nice 20k add-on to the main textfile, so I
thought! Once I started to use the original main menu structures, it sort of
expanded to the monster that you are about to attempt to read!

My advice is for you to take it nice and easy, don't read it all in one go,
lie down at frequent intervals, and ask yourself "Why?!"

Starting at the beginning.

------------ Alive Issue One : release date November 10th, 2000 -----------
============================================================================

There is an intro for this debut issue, a nice fractally inspired piece of
code by GGN of Kua. He was doing rather a lot of that sort of thing at the
time! There were some grisly graphics by Exocet featured here as well.

We are invited to take an unusual approach to demo appreciation, to "open
your mind and dive into their dream." Heyyy man!

A ragbag of remaining SV2000, and miscellanous material appears, and also
the STNICCC releases. This turned out to be quite a good party on that
level, worthy of a precursor to EIL part 2. We had "On Edge Of The Abyss" by
MYSTIC BYTES, a DSP Black Lotus lookalike for the Falcon. There was
"Sleepless" by MIND DESIGN to follow up Hardcore. There were some fragments
of Tat, with the three "Binliner" screens seen here.

There was an 'EKO System' for the STe, "Stniccc 2000" by OXYGENE. The guys
from Sirius reminded us they were back with "Centauri" . There were several
smaller releases, such as "Craptalk" by PYJAMA, "Xmas 2000" by PARANOIA,
"Senseless" by SUPREMACY, and Japemo and Pov 164 at the end.

I got to see the reviewing process from the other end, as the Maggie 10th

non-scene diskmag in traditional format. It had potential, but no real
articles. We were quite kind to it, others, (Moondog), were much harsher!
And George (Ggn) follows on from my Atari 8-bit demo reviews, with some of
his own.

From that list, the 'Royal Recipies' article must have been a direct stream
of consciousness thing from a really bad acid trip! The rest is almost

This really should be called 'Alive 2.5'. I saw the original menu planned
for issue 2, and that thing was huge, well up to the sort of size records of

very rapidly written reports and reviews to make up a post-party special

There is a fair bit of scene news from just before the party. The web

Of the party reports, there is a straight grab from Evil's DHS website one,
a series of personal views from STS and the party organisers. The best job
done at short notice, was by Paranoid who provided a decent party report. My
marathon length effort was nowhere near ready yet! I also use the excuse I
was roped in at short notice to provide some of the reviews!

Here it is, apart from the party reports, the real meat of the issue, the
demo reviews. Were they as brainblasting, second time around, in the cold
light of day and away from the party euphoria? Yep! Seems they are!

The rough division of effort on this section goes as follows. Paranoid gets
the top job reviewing the winning demo. CiH deals with the Swedish
accelerated Falcon school of demos, and STS picks up the rest.

Almost missed in the rush, are two diskmags, one of which is new, and the
other an old reborn favourite! Undercover is back "Heeeres Moonie!"

Here's a large and mixed bag of news and assorted press releases. There are

The scene quiz provides too much inspiration from the opening question. "The
word 'Scene' stands for?" The correct answer being "A Senseless Collection
of Elephants Native from Estonia". Well if the trunk fits wear it, I
suppose.

There are some stunning games on the way, the Reservoir Gods burst back to

did 'Death Adder' get to in his porting of 'Super Fighter'. Maybe it didn't

Obsession! Then there is a real high-end curio, with Gem Elite needing a CT2

Marss steps in with plentiful Jaguar and Lynx material, and even STS is
boosted by console fever to come up with a couple of nice articles, backed

There are no real stand-out stories for the scene news, that should have
been warning enough for Mekka really! CiH returns an old Diskbusters DBA Mag
favourite to prominence with 'Minimag', a zine within a zine taking a
twisted view of today's news. The party fun continues with Paracon 3, and
the Finnish sleepless winter fun at ALT.

There is a little bit of a 'battle of the accelerators', with the CT60 going
up against a strong paper challenge from the Tempest. Unfortunately, that's
where the Tempest stayed, on paper. Ah well, a 300mhz PPC looked so good. At
the same time the Eclipse graphics card is given the Deez once-over, and
Paranoid swiftly sees off that nasty vapourware goblin, the TOSter. What a
bunch of TOSter's they turned out to be! The Eiffel revew was sensible in
comparison.

For the rest of it, Fading Twilight goes to new heights, and Mr Pink is in
bullish RG corporate press release mode for their new soon-coming game
Godpey. There is an early adventure into Atari games on mobile phones dug
out by Marss.

No major stand-out demos this time. Remember we are in the months before
what was supposed to be the next big Easter party. There are plenty of
little bits and pieces though.

Rather oddly, STS has a category placing meltdown and places the Chosneck
diskmag, which does deserve to be called a major release, and a preview of
the new Highwire web browser together here in this section.

There IS a big stand-out game release though. This issue is in fact, a bit
of a 'Chu Chu Rocket' special, celebrating the Reservoir Gods return to
activity.

A review by Paranoid is followed by collected IRC feedback, which in turn is
followed by an amusing article from a mainstream mag, 'PC-Zone', who manages
to get hold of this game and figure out how to work an ST emulator! It is a
big hit with them and us alike!

The mixture of other releases, covered by various reviewers can't really
hope to compete with that, and they don't. Ok, 'Mem' was a neat little game
in a scene style, with the lovely Exocet drawing for it.

There was almost more activity here with not one, but two intros, then there
was at the Mekka Symposium party. Ray of tSCc was great value for money with
his classy newschool dentro. Bumpmapping, tunnels, and fire effects, topped
with a neat piccy from Havoc. What more could you ask for? Well there's a
Falcon intro from Mind Design as well. Their part of the two for one special
includes garish metablobs, lots of particle stuff, a vector box tunnel, and
culminating in blobs trapped in a vector cube. This issue is clearly the
winner for the range and quality of its intro's, but how does the rest of it
measure up?

A mixture of good stuff fills out this section. CiH follows STS into some
coding party nostalgia, written in the hopeful period before the Mekka
debacle. The story behind the scene nicks comes to a close, with a whole
section devoted to the puzzle of 'Felice'. Now that was a story!

The interviews are with some less well known, but up and coming people,
including our dear current co-editor. Finally, a couple of very useful
articles by some versatile Swedes cover an IDE to SCSI converter, and offer
some coding hints to get Falcon demos away from the trap of being tied too
closely to one specific setup.

The demos for review have reached new levels of thinness. There is a clear
missing Easter party production gap this time! What is there does its best.
CiH has to go to a whole other scene to get inspiration here. As part of the
Acorn Risc PC series, he does a lengthy demo round-up for that machine.

On the other hand, we are heartened by a new issue of UCM, Moondog's best
yet, and the first release of the fabulous 'Ace' softsynth. There is a
little bit of diskmag editors pisstaking of contributors who don't
contribute from STS.

For emulator fans, there's a new version of SainT, and for internet fans, a
couple more homepages are picked out and reviewed.

'Double Juggle Vegetabobble'. In fact, that small handheld gaming machine
gets another review for a conversion to the ST from the French Connection.

Marss gets in with some Jaguar collected material, and self-confessed Sega
Dreamcast fan Paranoid gets in with his retrospective of that brave but
doomed console. STS does not wish to be left out of the minority console

The big winner for this issue is the misc topics section. Everyone seems to
have a say here. There is some useful and informative material, such as a
large guide to the Acorn Risc PC, and the (then) current state of the Acorn
market. Paranoid efficiently fills his role as undertaker for the Sega
console hardware, and for a number of consoles that failed but were ahead of
their time.

It was a summer of big sci-fi, judging by the Star Wars 'Attack of the
Clones' review, and did I really sit down and recolour all that ascii stuff?

There is a fair bit of the fun and frivolous too, with a second special
edition Minimag, covering the death of the Queen Mother. There was also the
first episode of the occasional but persistent ascii cartoon 'Disobedient
Robotic Pop Idol'!

Finally, there was one article which has gone to places where no other
diskmag has gone before, with the tale of a creepy paedophile I knew many
years ago! This last item has come back to haunt me briefly, as pursuing
journalists, seeking to talk to this person, have googled this article as
reference material.

I wonder if there will be a sequel sometime?!

And what a feast of releases we have in this issue! The results are in for
the third Error in Line party. In spite of some missing entries, there is
enough here to put a smile on the face of even the most pessimistic diskmag
editor.

The highlights are 'Underscore' for the Falcon, and almost too many to
choose for the ST. It is a fight between 'Posh', 'Darkness' from DHS, and
'Fantasia' from Dune. Not to mention a well-stocked second division of demos
and intro's, especially from the hyperactive Res Gods and others. Oh yes,
there was the three years in the waiting 'Delta' megademo from Earx and
Lineout. Did I mention the Cool Girls by the way? It's almost ridiculous, we
go from scraping the barrel for the last couple of years, to a flood of
demo's which is enough for two or three issues of Alive. Famine to feast,
don't you love it?

There are other big releases apart from the demos covered, which include the
RG cavern romp 'Superfly', and the release of the eagerly awaited tracker
version of the Ace softsynth from Newbeat. Also, the steady progress of UCM
is tracked to issue 24, and CiH tries one of those newfangled LCD flatscreen
thingies on his Falcon. It works!

You can tell where the bulk of the effort goes into an issue of Alive just
by looking here. If it is a quiet time, scene-wise, this section gets a big
boost. This time around, there is not so much to show here as the scene is
buzzing. Highlights do include a satirical look at the Iraq invasion,
Minimag style! Paranoid goes to a museum to watch some demos, shakes his
head saying "They don't have a clue about this!" Exocet dabbles with the
Gameboy Advance demo scene, and STS enters the Matrix.

A seven month pause between issues earns this one the soubriquet of 'Issue
(l)eight from STS. The editorial is one of totally contrasting moods and
changing directions. CiH is ecstatic, the long awaited CT60 has arrived, new
possibilities abound. STS is giving up, he's had enough! What will happen
next?!

STS offers his views on the past year. There is a batch of party reports,
including the ever-popular ALT party with new added heterosexual naked sauna
appeal! There was also a nice little retro show called Micromart, and most
importantly, the first official information about the new Outline Easter
party.

STS types in scener names into Google, to see what comes up, some demo names
are explained. The 2003 class of Gem Candy is shown off, and Simon Sunnyboy
explains the use and purpose of Atari Forums.

The big news for this year, and this issue of Alive, is the arrival of the
much delayed CT60. CiH has got his hands on one of these, and gives it a
thorough going-over, Deez joins in. The DHS scene polls and their results
are analysed. STS asks if we are old farts (yes!) And CiH awards the Alive
Oscars, sort of a continuation of the Maggie end of the year review.

This issue does quite well for demos, in spite of the fact that we are
'between parties'. The first CT60 intro makes it in time, thanks to Deez.
For those people with less elevated tastes in hardware, the full appearance
of the Illusion and Fantasia demo's from Dune sorts them out nicely, along
with Earx's Falcon busting 'Out' demo. YM Warriors fight again, and
Donkeysex can be had for the price of a download!

Gamers are invited to shoot zombies by Stax, battle in space with two
players by Simon Sunnyboy. There are a couple of 'lost and found again'
games in the form of 'Roger' and 'Tiles Osmosis'. They hold up quite well,
as it turns out.

Highwire is still evolving at a furious rate. Paranoid gives his expertise
in the newschool field of Chunky to Planar coding, and Cyclone gets stuck
into 'Pixlite'. Emulators on the Atari are subjected to the full force of
CT60, and there is even a bit of YM-sound on the Acorn.

modern expression of this continual angst, taking in such things as spam and
spyware. Dma Sc proves that the time he does not spend making music, he uses
up by listening to it with another CD review. Paranoid returns to the story
of Sega. The Robotic Pop Idol takes a Seb-like view and considers ending it
all! Gus Spank puts on his political analyst hat, and considers the curious
speaking habits of an ex-Malaysian president. There is a sort of tutorial
thing on how to make a big space war game, and even baptist christian
cartoons are given a fun twist in this issue!

With the departure of STS from editing duties, there is a long pause between
issues. Alive seems to have been cast into the outer darkness, but there has
already been a succession agreed. From issue 9, Cyclone of Xtroll, or CXT
takes over STS's part. It is a good while before a new issue of Alive comes
together, and in that time there is a further unexpected development. None
other than Moondog comes on board as a third co-editor, finally giving up
the struggle to maintain Undercover Mag on his own.

The editorials reflect something of these troubled times, and not a little
bit of unwanted real life happenings intruding in some places too.

There has been a fair bit of activity whilst we've been sleeping. MusicMon
is back from the dead, and some people reach chiptracker heaven with the
revived Triplex tracker, both of which were featured as giveaway's on the
Alive 9 'cover disk'. That was one big change of management style, to bundle
Alive with a big release or two.

There is a fair wodge of party reports, including the latest Paracon and
Unconventional reports, The popular Outline Easter party gets in, including
the UCM realtime text. There is a Jagfest report, an Alt Party report as
well. To conclude, there is a cunningly edited hatchet-job on Breakpoint
'04. Oh, and that CT60 seems to he ongoing, with an interim report. That can
be summed up as "cooling issue sorted out, some stuff appearing for it now."

This section occupies a bigger share of the mag this time around. In ten
words is a wordplay game, to describe something in precisely ten words, no
more, no less. The 2004 retrospective is the 'End of the year awards' in
another guise. 'What's in a year' asks the reader to consider several
anniversaries, including this one! Not to mention the 20th birthday of the
ST. Simon Sunnyboy asks if the Atari scene is dying or alive, I think it is
the latter! There is a bit of a team talk from CiH. Jane Whittaker tells of
their time at Atari. Mr Pink shares his expertise of the world of games
development, and Marss shows himself to be quite a good original article
writer if pushed, with his 'Forum Boys' piece.

Outline '04 entries, and the DHS online competition, all of which contained
some very nice material. The CT60 Virtual light machine, Paradox's Xmas
demo, the NoCrew Stocasto intro all get their own individual reviews.

For something different, we get the STNICCC directors cut dvd to look at,
and some printed media with the sadly missed Retro Gamer magazine, and the
French to English ST Magazine.

Moondog is dismissive of some compact disk collections, there is a great new
image browser called zView. There are several game reviews, where Moondog
and CXT overlap to some extent, and a wodge of previews of games that have
either not yet appeared, or never will do so?

with good clean communist coding, the Polyplay, is considered. Felice gets
back in with a couple of days out. There is a very alternative tinfoil
hatted view of Michael Moore's latest film, and those wacky baptist

wacky race to the end of this issue, but loses out to Moondog the movie

There has been quite a rate of activity in this early part of 2005, with
lots of releases, both in and out of the Outline party. The uber-demo
happens to be a refugee from Error in Line in 2003. Finally, the 'Beams'
demo is out, was it worth the wait? You bet! The Outline entries are
disposed off efficiently in a series of combined reviews. There is a big
musical influence this time around, with Just Musix 4 for the Falcon, Phat
demo, tYmeWarp, and the Maximiser tracker catering for fans of the Yamaha
sound chip! Moondog casts a glowering eye over the hyperactive Beasts Crew,
and isn't too impressed with the sprite record attempts either.

There is a fair bit of activity for games, with Pooz being previewed,
Flashback making it to an SDL abandonware conversion, but you do need a
fairly meaty machine to play that one. We also find the full version of the
budget Willies Adventures impersonator 'Blum' out at last. One of the other
Outline '05 game entries 'Ausbruch' is previewed, and a monostyle departure
into text adventures called 'Chris Hellfire' is previewed too. A new online
enabled application from Zorro, zWeather, allows you to check the weather
from the comfort of your Falcon.
