SND-Pack 7 by Dead Hackers Society and NoCrew (Sweden) [2000] Jealous about all the PC folks running Atari emulators on the PC now because they get to listen to a few thousand of YM-tunes from great Atari games, demos and other programs ? You don't need to be, SNDPlayer 1.4 can replay SNDH-files which feature the same music of the same games and demos and other programs - in addition, it uses the real YM2149 inside your Atari for better replay quality, more effects and less CPU-time. Still jealous, because there are so many YMs available and yet "so little" SNDH-tunes ? Again, you don't need to be, Evil of DHS has found a way of "emulating" a YM-file within the SNDH-format. Yes, sir, it's even kind of easy: The YM-format is nothing else but the state of the YM2149-registers saved in a certain frequency. 50 times a second is usually appropriate for most games and applications - the SNDH-format is completely different as it contains a real replay-routine needing an MC680x0 and an YM2149 to play the tunes. That enables SNDH to offer a lot more than YM can, for example, YM2149-effects that use a lot of CPU-support such like the newer tunes from Mad Max, Tao or the currently very popular SidSoundDesigner tunes. But coming to think of it, one could of course write a replay-routine for SNDH that does nothing else but write values into the YM2149 registers in a certain frequency, such as for example 50 Hz. And voila, SNDH can replay YM, too. That's about the underlying theory, but of course in reality, it's not quite that easy. Nevertheless, NoRing of NoCrew invested quite some time and converted a lot of the YM-tunes available that were not available as SNDH before and Evil of DHS now sorted them, packed them and offers them on the SND-Player homepage (http://sndplayer.atari.org) for download. The most up-to-date file is the pack 07 which contains another load of tunes from games and demos that were so far unavailale for real Atari users without the possibility to replay YM directly. It features more tunes from people like David Whittaker or Mad Max, the newer ones by Milhouse, but also tunes from game-musicians such as Tim Follin, Barry Leitch, Ben Daglish or Matt Furniss and Martin Walker. More music from Allister Brimble, J.C. Brooke, Dave Lowe and lots of others. And it features some really great tunes indeed. Goldrunner 2 is there as well as Supercars and Supercars 2, tunes from Lotus, Lotus 2, Last Ninja, IK Plus, Lemmings, Spitting Images, The Munsters, Klax, R-Type and lots and lots of others. This SNDH-pack mainly features music from games but that's nothing to be sad about. It's a great package that features a lot of good tunes from lots of good games that i really love to replay on my desktop. Unfortunately, some of the tunes tend to hang up my IDE-harddisk inside the Falcon, but otherwise, it's one SNDH-package you can't afford to miss.
